The Appalachian Land Study team recently collaborated with the New Economy and Land Team of the Alliance for Appalachia to host a workshop on "Land as Liberation" for the Alliance's virtual Midsummer Event, held June 29th-30th. The Alliance for Appalachia is a collaboration of more than a dozen organizations across Central Appalachia working for a healthy, just economy and supporting communities impacted by extraction.
The Land as Liberation workshop focused on linking with wider land justice movements in the south and why a reparations framework that centers Black and Indigenous voices is central to understanding our work on land justice in Appalachia. The workshop drew on resources from the Land Liberation Study of Highlander Research and Education Center, Black Land and Power, and more.
